7/27/2014: San Francisco's Bay Gala Celebrates Five Years of Partnership

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – August 27, 2014 – Enjoy an elegant evening of cocktails, seafood, and sharks on Thursday, October 9, 2014 as The Bay Institute and Aquarium of the Bay celebrate their annual San Francisco Bay Gala at Aquarium of the Bay. This year’s San Francisco Bay Gala will commemorate five years of partnership between the two organizations, as well as the five-year anniversary of Aquarium of the Bay’s transition into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
The evening will also honor Darius and Sarah Anderson for their key role in helping the two organizations join forces. In May 2006, when The Bay Institute was unable to complete a capital campaign in time to purchase Aquarium of the Bay, the Anderson’s stepped in and temporarily acquired the Aquarium to ensure that the city continued to have a waterfront attraction that was both fun and focused on protecting the Bay during the transition.

By 2009, thanks to Darius and Sarah Anderson’s efforts, and tremendous support from the local community, The Bay Institute completed the successful culmination of its four-year effort to acquire Aquarium of the Bay, transforming the once for profit attraction into a self-supporting, nonprofit Aquarium. This collaboration has allowed both organizations to better focus on their vision and shared mission to protect, restore, and inspire the conservation of San Francisco Bay and its watershed, from the Sierra to the sea. Since the partnership began, the Aquarium has become a center for Bay and ocean education, science, and conservation.

“I’m proud to have been part of this important moment in the history of both of these organizations, and I’m honored to be involved in this year’s anniversary event to celebrate the creation of one of San Francisco’s preeminent Bay conservation nonprofits,” says Darius Anderson.

“I’d like to commend Darius and Sarah Anderson for personally taking a risk in order to ensure the success of Aquarium of the Bay, and I’d like to thank them for reinvesting in the Aquarium during their leadership years and for supporting our vision,” says John Frawley, President and CEO of Aquarium of the Bay and The Bay Institute. “Thanks to their efforts, Aquarium of the Bay has become a premier education and conservation center that has since reached millions of visitors with our mission to protect the San Francisco Bay.”

The San Francisco Bay Gala will offer guests an opportunity to enjoy the Bay at sunset with fine cocktails and full bars provided by Tonic, and a delicious strolling dinner hosted throughout the Aquarium’s exhibits and underwater tunnels. Guests will enjoy food by some of the finest Bay Area Sustainable Seafood Watch Alliance certified restaurants including Farallon Restaurant, Fog Harbor Fish House, Hog Island Oyster Co., Bistro Boudin, La Mar Cebicheria Peruana, Pier Market, Twenty Five Lusk, Waterbar, and Wipeout Bar & Grill, with seafood product provided by Royal Hawaiian.

This event is the largest fundraiser in The Bay Institute and Aquarium of the Bay’s calendar and guests are invited to take part in a Fund-a-Need, raffle, and silent auction. Proceeds from this event will support education programs, animal care, and conservation efforts of The Bay Institute and Aquarium of the Bay.
