The Bay Institute Appoints John Frawley as President and CEO
Novato, CA, September 8, 2009The Bay Institute (TBI) today announced that it has appointed John Frawley to the newly-created position of President and Chief Executive Officer. The appointment follows TBI’s June 11th acquisition of Aquarium of the Bay and reflects TBI’s strategic decision to provide coordinated administration for the two organizations and their complementary conservation and education programs.
“I am delighted to welcome John Frawley to the TBI team,” stated TBI Executive Director Christina Swanson. “In addition to his brilliant leadership of the Aquarium and a deep commitment to the Bay, John brings invaluable management and fundraising skills. Just as the partnership between TBI and the Aquarium has created an organization that is greater than the sum of its parts, John’s new role will increase my capacity to advance TBI’s critical work to protect, restore and advocate for the San Francisco Bay, the Delta and California’s most important watershed.”
“I’m both humbled and excited about this opportunity to help advance TBI’s mission to protect and restore San Francisco Bay and its watershed,” Frawley commented. “TBI has an exceptional team of experts, and I look forward to working with them as we grow TBI’s efforts to secure the future of California’s most important natural resource.”
“Our new one-team approach enhances TBI’s managerial expertise, encourages full collaboration across all our programs, and provides our staff with enhanced tools to support our success,” stated Carol Lind, Chair, TBI Board of Directors. “The Board is particularly pleased that we are able to leverage the separate strengths of all our organizations’ top management. The new structure is a win-win for TBI, and for San Francisco Bay and its watershed.”
Frawley will also continue his leadership role at Aquarium of Bay, where he was responsible for a 13-year effort that turned a failing, privately-owned attraction into a financially successful, fully accredited nonprofit marine nature center. Previously, he served in a variety of management positions at several zoos and parks. Frawley sits on the Board of Directors of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and is a Board Member of the American Institute of Ethics. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Minnesota State University in Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services, with an emphasis in Wildlife and Resources Management / Biology.
TBI will continue to be headquartered in Novato, CA, and the aquarium will continue to do business as Aquarium of the Bay.
